When you are expecting a child, may it be your first baby or your third child – it won’t matter because you will still want the best for your unborn child. Sure, a balanced diet is recommended but during pregnancy, expected mothers would also need to have extra nutrients and vitamins as she needs to nurture not only her unborn child but herself too.

Docosahexaenoic acid or what we know of as DHA is especially important for pregnant and breastfeeding mothers. This docosahexaenoic acid is derived from the dietary alpha-linolenic acid and this is found in foods like fatty fish, eggs and organ meats.

Did you know that DHA is the one of the major structural form of omega-3 fatty acid in the gray matter of the brain and the retina of the eyes? Without sufficient amount of DHA, the development may be impaired. It helps the mother-to-be to prevent pre-term labor and will make sure that they won’t have postpartum depression. It’s amazing that when a person has low omega-3 fatty acids (DHA), he/she can start to show mood swings, memory loss, neurological conditions and even visual impairment.

As an expected mother takes in these types of vitamins, it is them transferred to the fetus and will aid them throughout the pregnancy process. Though, it’s a must to continuously take such supplements and make sure that the mother is also very healthy as the unborn child is dependent with his/her mother.
